Assignment # The Video Montage Assignment

So I am now posting my Video Monatge assignment. Hopefully I’ve posted it in time to be eligible for the 2006 Oscars. My biggest problem making this video montage was deciding which of the superbly shot, high resolution video clips to choose from. I decided, before hitting the editing room, to create the montage around a song, versus looking at the collection of clips and then deciding what to use for audio in the background. The song I decided to use is a classic right out of the early eighties, ‘I Ran’, by Flock of Seagulls. Now, I vaugly remember this song when it come out. Actually, I don’t remember when it came out (1981), I was only two years old. But my father mentioned he did listen to it when it was first released, so maybe it’s been stuck in my head for the past 24 years. For the younger crowd the song will sound familiar because it was used in a commercial, a couple years back, for a video game, ‘Vice City’ I think the game was. Regardless, it’s a catchy tune that I’m sure will bring back some memories for both Matt and Greg. As far as the creation process goes, I just let the holy spirit work through me when I create my art. I’m really just rambling along now because I’m waiting for the video to upload to the server, just killing some time. And now its done so here it is………

Bigger Needles

Medical news: Study - Longer needles needed for fatter buttocks.

Fatter rear ends are causing many drug injections to miss their mark, requiring longer needles to reach buttock muscle, researchers said on Monday.

Standard-sized needles failed to reach the buttock muscle in 23 out of 25 women whose rears were examined after what was supposed to be an intramuscular injection of a drug.

Two-thirds of the 50 patients in the study did not receive the full dosage of the drug, which instead lodged in the fat tissue of their buttocks, researchers from The Adelaide and Meath Hospital in Dublin said in a presentation to the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.

Take it yourself

This is a pretty good little quiz to see where you stand politcally, in case you didn’t know what you should label yourself as. I’m a centrist, this time I took the quiz. I think the last time I took it I was a liberal. Uh oh, I guess I’m moving to the right. I hope I don’t become a conservative, I just don’t think I have the energy to defend and justify every moronic thing Bush says or does.

Stay Saved Premillenialist Christians Shouldn’t Drive

I’m sure everyone here has been driving and seen the bumper sticker that reads “In case of Rapture, car will be unmanned.” While this never fails to inspire some very action-movie style daydreams and exciting video game premises, it also brings up a far more practical issue: should saved Christians be allowed to drive?

One would think that, if we don’t grant driver’s licences to narcoleptics, epileptics, or other people who may, at random, lose all control of their careening vehicle, we sure as hell won’t grant a license to someone who may just up and disappear without warning. But, this never seems to come up.

I’m willing also to consider legislation that would provide for them the right to pilot small, possibly electric city-cars that are speed-limited to 25 MPH, contain adequate warning lights and signage, and, upon detection of loss of driver (via a simple switch in the seat that disengages when the driver is raptured away) sounds a warning klaxon as it slowly comes to a safe, controlled stop under automatic control.

Amen!

Yale bans drinking games at Harvard-Yale game - Oct 27, 2005

Yale is banning drinking games from this year’s football game against Harvard and will shut down all tailgate parties after halftime — a move some alumni say could put a damper on one of college football’s oldest and most storied rivalries.

The Ivy League contest, known simply as “The Game,” dates to 1875 and draws nearly as many fans outside the stadium as inside. Students and alumni fill U-Hauls with kegs, grills and hard liquor

“We don’t want to send hordes of students to the hospital after each game. Drinking games are meant to get people drunk,”

I play drinking games mainly for the camaraderie and the love of the game.

What harm can a little binge drinking at Yale cause?

Wired News: Creating the Global Hot Spot

Telecom giant Inmarsat is weeks away from launching the second in a series of two super-satellites — designed to be among the most powerful commercial communications spacecraft in orbit — that will beam broadband data and voice services to almost any location on the planet.

Instead of cruising for a Starbucks, BGAN subscribers can hit the road with a portable terminal as small as their laptop computer and surf the web — or connect with the office LAN — at broadband speeds of up to 492 Kbps.

“The network will cover 88 percent of the globe’s landmass,” said Chris McLaughlin, vice president of corporate communications for Inmarsat in London.

The satellite will harvest power from the sun by deploying massive solar panels that almost span the width of a football field. The panels will also act as solar sails, using the pressure of particles from the sun to provide additional propulsion in orbit.

It doubt it will be in the US for quite some time. Current telco and cable lobbyists will be dropping big bucks to make sure this doesn’t get a foot hold in the US. We have a funny kind of capitalism here. There are two real important aspects of true capitalism. Those are, the equal playing field for all and because of this the prices consumers pay will be reduced. But not US capitalism. If a comapny, or industry, can afford the lobbyists they will put up as many barriers to entering thee market as they can afford, so they don’t have to have price wars with new, emerging companies.

Oligopolies- A market condition in which sellers are so few that the actions of any one of them will materially affect price and have a measurable impact on competitors.

Accidental invention could light up the future - LiveScience - MSNBC.com

The main light source of the future will almost surely not be a bulb. It might be a table, a wall, or even a fork.

An accidental discovery announced this week has taken LED lighting to a new level, suggesting it could soon offer a cheaper, longer-lasting alternative to the traditional light bulb. The miniature breakthrough adds to a growing trend that is likely to eventually make Thomas Edison’s bright invention obsolete.

The new device gives off a warm, yellowish-white light that shines twice as bright and lasts 50 times longer than the standard 60 watt light bulb.

The only downside is the cost. Even though prices for LED bulbs are dropping, the bulbs I used ranged from $26.95 (Sun’s Dusk) to $34.95 (Vivid and Color Changing) to $44.95 (Vivid +). They’re where compact fluorescent bulbs were just a few years ago.

As prices continue to fall we’ll see new designs with more LEDs and higher lumen output giving CFLs a huge run for the money. In the meantime, you should think about trying a LED bulb.

Redneck Philosophy

The Redneck Theology

The term “redneck” is often misunderstood by those north of the Mason-Dixon line. Many Yankees misunderstand this beloved term of endearment and treat the word as if it were some kind of insult. A true Southerner understands that achieving the state of Redneck is a noble pursuit. The guiding principles of Redneck philosophy are easily misunderstood by outsiders, so let’s take a closer look at the goals of those who strive for the state of Redneck

a true Redneck does not feel the need to impress people with the outward trappings of their Redneck lifestyle and is perfectly comfortable in an Armani suit and BMW.

The true Redneck is at-peace with the world. They always feel safe (not just because they have guns in every room of their home), and they are not concerned with what others may think of their Redneck lifestyle.

A true Redneck does not respect man-made timelines and lives life one day at a time. A true redneck may put a car up on-blocks for a decade before restoring it

A true Redneck will follow their tastes and desires without regard for social customs and “appropriate” behavior.

A real redneck know details about every one of their ancestors who fought in the Civil War and American Revolution.

A true redneck will also participate in ware reenactments as a way of honoring the redneck sacrifices of their ancestors.

Sure, the tenets and promises of the Redneck Theology seem like unachievable goals, but I’m told that with years of conscientious study and practice, a true state of Redneck is achievable, even for a sinner like me.

I never considered the theology of rednecks. When ever I thought ‘redneck’ this guy would always pop into my head.

If your favorite feline is wearing an apron instead of sporting an hourglass figure, you’ve got one fat cat.

If your favorite feline is wearing an apron instead of sporting an hourglass figure, you’ve got one fat cat.

Steps:
1. Check that your pet’s ribs are easily felt but not visibly sticking out. This indicates that your cat is at a desirable weight.

2. Look at your pet from above. Some indentation between the rib cage and the hips, depicting an hourglass shape, indicates that your pet is at a desirable weight.

3. Check your pet’s belly. If the belly of a cat protrudes, the cat may be overweight. (A protruding belly on a cat is called an apron.)

4. Feel your pet’s hips. Anything more than light fleshiness indicates that your pet is above normal weight.

5. Always consult a veterinarian before putting a pet on a diet. Your veterinarian can recommend a special diet appropriate to your pet, and can examine your pet to rule out the possibility that a serious medical condition is causing the obesity.

Warnings:
Visible ribs or excessive thinness could be a sign of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) in cats, especially in those over 12 years of age. If this were to occur, just put your cat down and get a new one. or better yet get a dog.

How to Make Distressed Jeans - WikiHow

Dying to get in on the distressed jean trend, but not willing to shell out major cash for ripped designer duds? Here’s how to turn even the oldest, most unfashionable pair of jeans into bohemian-chic attire.

Steps

1. Place a block of wood (or some other solid surface that you don’t mind possibly damaging) within the pant leg or denim region you want to distress.
2. Rub a steak knife vertically or horizontally against area of denim that you would like to distress. Rub gently for mild distress; rub longer and more vigorously to create more visible distress (such as holes and tears).
3. Fray jeans by rubbing sandpaper around pockets, knees, hemlines, or any other area of denim that you would like to have a soft, worn appearance.
4. Dampen a sponge with bleach and rub it around the outer edges of holes for a faded look.
5. Wash your jeans.
6. Wear your newly stylish distressed jeans.

It’s crucial for success in distressing your jeans- you cannot skip step six!

To explain the process, the camera was tripod-mounted and I took an infrared shot and then immediately removed the filter and shot a normal, visible light photograph. Afterwards, I sandwiched the pictures in Photoshop and changed the Visible light layer’s blending mode to Color. This means that the black and white infrared picture’s tones are retained, so the sky is dark and the grass is bright, but they are rendered with the colour from the visible light capture.

Landlords left with “un-rentable” properties where suicides or killings have occurred because people are too scared to move into them may now be able to receive compensation, it has been learned.

Major landlords’ associations have joined forces to create a fund that will provide compensation to owners of properties where a suicide, murder or other killing has occurred, especially as home insurance does not cover these events.

“But, we’re not only going to offer the compensation alone. We’re also going to try hard to make sure these incidents don’t occur, make mental health consultations available to tenants

In one case where a murder and dismemberment of a body occurred in an apartment block, the seven others living in the same building moved out within one month. The landlord lost so much rent he has been unable to pay his own housing loans and been forced to sell his own house and move into the apartment that should have been providing his income.

Many landlords can also sue the bereaved relatives of suicide victims

I had signed a one year lease in a haunted house, i never saw anything strange, my roomates did though. i always had an eerie feeling when i was there. i would never allow myself to be home alone. if i pulled up and there were no cars there i would just go and stay at my parents house. i had five roomates though, someone tended to usually be there. now whenever i sign a lease for an apartment i add a ‘no ghost’ clause…..just in case.

666: What’s in a Number? by Lon Milo DuQuette

October 2005 FATE - 666: What’s in a Number? by Lon Milo DuQuette

This an interesting article from fate magazine on the origins of the devils number 666.

Are you afraid of the number 666? If you were issued an automobile license plate or a telephone number that included a string of three sixes would you ask for a different number? Do you think the number 666 is inherently evil? Do you believe any number can in and of itself be evil?

There is a name for your condition - “Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia” - the fear of the number 666.

The dreaded number makes its first and only appearance in the last book of the New Testament, the Revelation of Saint John the Divine (often mistakenly called Revelations) - a book that for centuries has been interpreted by theologians as a document prophesying the terrible events that will take place at the end of the world.

Early Church fathers decided that John, the author of the Revelation, was the same John who wrote the Gospel According to John (the last of the Four Gospels). Modern experts from a wide range of religious and non-religious persuasions agree this is probably not the case. The style of the Greek writing and other obvious differences suggest the two books were penned by different individuals

After the crucifixion John was arrested and banished to the tiny isle of Patmos in the Aegean Sea, a place renowned in the ancient world for two things: its barren isolation and the fact that the powerful hallucinogenic mushroom Amanita muscaria grew there in abundance. We will never know for certain whether or not John (knowingly or unknowingly) was influenced by the magic mushroom.

since the apocalypse didn’t happen in the first century (at least not in the way predicted in the Revelation), people have been eagerly looking forward to the end of the world, seeking out individuals they don’t like and trying to make their names add up to 666. Likely candidates have been Martin Luther, Henry VIII, Robespierre, Napoleon Bonaparte, George Washington (and his alleged Illuminati double, Adam Weishaupt), Lenin, Adolf Hitler, Stalin, Chairman Mao, Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Harry S. Truman, Prince Charles, King Juan Carlos of Spain, Mikhail Gorbachev, Bill Clinton, Osama Bin Laden, and both George Bushes - and, oh, I almost forgot, all the Popes.

There was, however, one man in the not-too-distant past who proudly claimed the title. His name was Aleister Crowley, and during his lifetime the newspapers called him “the Wickedest Man in the World.”

Crowley tried to explain this in court when he testified in a 1934 lawsuit. He was asked, “Did you take to yourself the designation of ‘the Beast 666′?”

“Yes.”

“Do you call yourself the ‘Master Therion’?”

“Yes.”

“What does ‘Therion’ mean?”

“Great wild beast.”

“Do these titles convey a fair impression of your practice and outlook on life?”

“It depends on what they mean.”

“The Great Wild Beast and the Beast 666 are out of the Apocalypse?”

“It only means sunlight; 666 is the number of the sun. You can call me ‘Little Sunshine.’”

This was a very interesting article and what was the conclusion?

the number 666 is strange and wonderful. But what would happen if we were to discover that there had been some kind of mistake and that 666 was not the number Saint John referred to in the 17th verse of the 13th chapter of his book? Would the nature of evil change? Would satanic rock bands have to change their tattoos?

Maybe they’ll have to. Recently a 1,500-year-old papyrus manuscript was examined, using new technologies to “read” the heretofore illegible script. The document is written in Greek and is the oldest known version of the Book of the Revelation. The tiny fragment confirms what many scholars and churchmen have long suspected. The text actually reads:

“Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man: and his number is 616.”

CNN.com - Stem cell hope for spinal injuries - Oct 3, 2005

Scientists in the U.S. have successfully used neural stem cells to regenerate damaged spinal cord tissue in mice, raising hopes that the technique could be used to treat disabilities caused by spinal cord injuries and human neurological disorders.

Within just nine days the mice showed marked improvement in their walking ability, according to the results of the study published in the journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Early Edition.

A lack of myelin, caused by either disease or injury, can cause motor and sensory disorders such as multiple sclerosis, and paralysis.

“This work is a promising first step and supports the need to study multiple stem cell types for the possibility of treating human neurological injury and disease,” said UC Irvine’s Dr. Aileen Anderson.

Report: New stem cell methods may avoid embryo destruction

Two new mouse experiments may show how to obtain human embryonic stem cells without ethical hurdles, a step that could allow federal funding for such research, scientists reported Sunday.

There was one tiny photograph of him at a YMCA camp plus a few laconic and uninformative entries in a soldier’s log from the war year, 1917-18.
–Edward W. Said, Out of Place: A Memoir

last week i had a prof tell me my paper was laconic, i had to ask what that meant. now it pops up as dictionary.com’s word of the day.

The Son of Man

The man in the bowling hat is a painting done by Rene Magritte in 1964. The title of the painting is ‘The Son of Man’. The painting shows up in the movie ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’, possibly my favorite movie. I was watching it today and became curious about the painting of the man in the bowling hat, so I looked it up on wikepedia. It turns out it is a self portrait and

about the painting Magritte said,

Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden…

I took the ‘man in the bowlers hat’ out of its original background and added the text behind it. The words in the background are not random and have personal meaning. Click on it for a larger image.

NewsForge | A first look at GIMP 2.4
A major update to the GNU Image Manipulation Program
(GIMP), widely regarded as the leading free software raster image
editing program, is scheduled for this month. The 2.4 release is
expected to include a number of new features and enhancements to
existing features.

I predict someday, in the near future, freeware software, like GIMP, will be as good, if not better than comercial products, like photoshop…..viva la revolution.

Photoshop CS2

i bought a book about photoshop today. i think i found a new hobby. so the book is Adobe Photoshop CS One-on-One. i’ve purchased many books on software in the past, mostly for macromedia, and i’ve learned to always stay a step behind. the current version is photoshop cs2, so what i did was obtain a copy of photoshop cs. by doing this i can go to amazon and buy used books for photoshop cs for about $5. the upgrades arent that big of an issue to me.

I found a cross hatch photo with jesus off the web and removed jesus out of it using the lasso tool. i know matt mentioned that he likes using a mask to pull images out of larger images. i’ve been using the lasso tool for years and am good at it, so i’ll just keep on keeping on with the lasso tool. The convoy photo i also got from google images and applied the graphic pen filter to it. I couldnt get the two images to match up excactly, but i think it looks good with jesus kind of standing out from the convoy.

Assignment #3-Clinton this time

I came up with the idea for this montage watching matts tutotial on clipping. I like how when applying the inner shadow it made the page look like there was a hole in it. I didnt end up using the clipping technique. I created a new transparent layer, painted the burnt hole on and added the inner shadow to that layer. I then set the layer between the photo of monica and the text. I got the image of monica, the cigar and the gif of bill doing a google image search. i realize that theyre all most likely copyrighted, i’ll have to let using copyrighted photos weigh on my conscience for now, for the sake of art. I decided to do clinton because i dont want to come off as just a bush basher.

Assignment #3-Photmontage

1. Using only two objects or environments combine them so that the new composite is more than the sum of its parts.

2. Using at least three source images and text create a photomontage that communicates a message about a political or social issue that you are concerned with.

This was a montage I put together a few months back. It originally a picture of the two kids sitting next to a gnome. I tried to think ‘what is scarier than a gnome’? I put this photo together with Macromedia Fireworks MX2004. I’d been using fireworks for the past five years and always had felt like I should switch to Photoshop. This class gave me the oppurtunity to do so and matts tutorials made the transition that much easier. The switch was inevitable since Adobe bought Macromedia this summer and I can only imagine they’re going to scrap fireworks. Photoshop is a much deeper program and do enjoy using it.

Using Bad Words

I just got off the phone with my mother and she made a couple comments on my blog. first, she didn’t like my use of profanity in my writing. so i will now make a conscious effort not to swear anymore. secondly, she thought my writings should be more grammatically correct…..i’ll concede on the curse words but i isn’t gonna make the effort to change my punxuation, gramor or spelin’……….after all a blog is journal, ain’t it?

This is a new blog i just made for the organization ESTIA. ESTIA is an ‘environment’ oriented group out of Orono, based on campus right now. our goals are to help people develop sustainable communities and eco-peace villages. i’ve been volunteering for estia for about six months and i’m still not sure what it is we really do.

this blog was based from an attractive template i found. i just went in and adjusted the css a little to tweak it to my liking. that’s another thing about doing websites for groups of people. what do they like. no one can ever decide, so i take it upon myself to do the layouts and color scheme. i personally think it looks good, but i’m the type of guy who’d where white socks with a tux, i dont do colors well. so i get very self(site) conscious when i do sites for people. but oh well, if they don’t like it they can do there own @$#%ing site, I am a volunteer.

here is the main site for estia
i should get paid big bucks for the beautiful layout of this site…….. it’s none too impressive but there are worse

Assignment #2

May favorite part of this assignment was fixing up the old photos with the rubber stamp tool. as far as the color correction, i really had no idea what i was doing. i just pushed the curves around until i saw something ‘better’. the problem with that was i had no idea of what the photos were supposed to look like. i guess it is completely subjective, when you’re not working for someone.

Confessions of an Economic Hit Man

i finished this book up today. quite an eye opening story of how american “corportocracy” has raped the resources of the world for the past 60 years. i knew something was afoul with american foreign policy, i just had now idea how fucked up it was. what gives this book so much weight is the fact that the author was a partner in one of the firms doing a lot of the damage.
a book worth reading.

in my time off from school i had worked as the public access tv coordinator and web guy for the city of old town. it was a great job where i had sole access to $100k worth of video equipment and my job was to create a television station for the city, local school department and a public access station for the citizens of old town. a job i’m sure many students in the new media department would love to cut their teeth on. for two years working there i acclomplished absolutely nothing. i’d broadcast a city council meeting twice monthly and that was about it. i passed up an amazing oppurtunity, one of my only real regrets in life…..i dropped the ball…..

i can’t find a spell check option on wordpress……..
